BIOPLAT-EU Project: the second project meeting in Kyiv, Ukraine

SEC Biomass experts Tetiana Zheliezna, Oleksandra Tryboi and Olha Haidai took part in the second BIOPLAT-EU (Promoting Sustainable Use of Underutilized Lands for Bioenergy Production through a Web-Based Platform for Europe) project meeting that was held in Kyiv on 26 of September, 2019. The project partners presented the implementation of the project objectives and discussed plans for the next half of the project year. Preliminary results on the data collection of marginal, underutilized and contaminated (MUC) lands in project countries are currently involved in the creation of a reference kit for further identification of MUC lands in the case study countries...

Fuel characteristics and properties of corn residues

Сorn residues have quite good fuel properties which are close to those of wood fuel. Due to that, biofuels made from corn residues can be burnt in the equipment intended for wood biomass. Ash content of corn stover is a major quality factor for further production of biofuels. The ash content depends on the type of harvesting technology as the amount of ash increases when biomass is contacting with soil. Typical total ash content for multiple passes of agricultural machines when harvesting is 8-10%. As regards ash melting behaviour, corn straw is close to wood biomass, which provides better conditions for combustion...

Potential of corn residues in Ukraine in 2018

Assessment of the corn residues potential for energy in 2018 based on the approach developed by the Bioenergy Association of Ukraine shows the following results: the theoretic potential (the whole amount of residues generated) is 46.5 Mt or 8.9 Mtoe; the economic potential (the amount available for energy that is 40% of the theoretical potential) is 6 Mt or 3.6 Mtoe including stalks – 9.7 Mt (1.9 Mtoe) and cobs – 3.3 Mt (0.6 Mtoe). Distribution of the corn residues potential over Ukraine’s territory is not even. Regions with the highest concentration of this type of biomass are oblasts with the biggest production volumes of...

Residues of grain corn production and its harvesting periods in Ukraine

Residues of grain corn production consist of: stalks which make up about 52.5% of the whole mass of the residues. At that, the stalk makes up 27.3% of the mass of the whole plant including grain (the same indexes are presented below for other parts of corn residues); leaves – 20.0 % (10.6%); cobs – 17.5% (9.0%); wrap of ear – 8.5% (4.3%); other parts – 1.5% (0.8%). Production of agricultural residues, including corn residues, is seasonable and depends on harvesting periods. Grain corn is harvested during different time frames, depending on the variety, the place of cultivation and the time of sowing. Usually, time frame for...

State of the art of corn production in the world and in Ukraine

Corn is the most high-yield crop, all the parts of which are widely used in different industries for many purposes, in particular: for food production; as feedstock in pharmaceutical, chemical and other branches of industry; as high-energy fodder that is suitable for all kinds of animals and birds; as raw material for the production of first and second-generation biofuels; as raw material for the production of biogas. Corn is a crop of high agro-technological value as it cleans soil of weeds and is a good precursor in the crop rotation. Judging by the absorption of carbon dioxide and release of oxygen, corn is one of the...

logo kotloturboprom

Bioenergy Association of Ukraine welcomes "Kotloturboprom" Ltd. within the members of the association.

"Kotloturboprom" Ltd. was created within MUST-IPRA Corporation and has been successfully working at the power market of Ukraine and CIS countries since 1998. The main activities of the "Kotloturboprom" Ltd. are new power generation facilities designing, complex modernization, and rehabilitation of existing equipment.

"Kotloturboprom" Ltd. offers complex services for design and engineering, manufacturing and supply of power equipment, as well as for the rehabilitation of thermal power plants, district heating power plants and power plants of industrial enterprises.

Using enterprise belonging to the company, "Kotloturboprom" Ltd. has the ability to perform the above operation, as EPC- contractor (turnkey), as evidenced by the completed projects, such as "Tripoli TPP", "Zmiev TPP".

Focusing in their designs to reduce natural gas consumption in the thermal energy sector and highly maneuverable, efficient and environmentally friendly equipment creation, the company "Kotloturboprom" Ltd. in the partnership with the leading European companies launched a new project - boilers production for biomass burning with the steam capacity from 1 to 50 t/h.  Since 2015, the company "Ukrgreenenergy", as a part of "Kotloturboprom" Ltd., in the cooperation with Kharkiv Regional State Administration, implemented the pilot projects for the construction of mini-CHP on biomass  (9.6 MW) in the region's settlements to replace the natural gas.

The enterprise includes:

  • "Energoprogress", specializes organization in Ukraine for design, technical re-equipment, and reconstruction of the main and an auxiliary equipment, pipelines, thermal power plants and CHP plants. This organization owns 60 years of experience within the energy market;
  • "Kharkov Boiler Mechanical plant " as a production base for the power equipment and spare parts production, owning a single line in Ukraine for the gas-tight panels for modern power boilers production.

Such combination of enterprises maximizes the accumulated design capabilities usage by the new power equipment manufacturing and the power equipment reconstruction.
